Salary range:

GS-05:  $32,028 - $41,633 Annually

GS-06:  $35.702 - $46,410 Annually

GS-07:  $39,674 - $51,580 Annually

Serves as a Medical Technician providing a variety of clinical laboratory services:

  • Perform proper collection and packaging of specimens by venipuncture and/or capillary, processing and distribution of specimens to core laboratory.
  • Apply analytical methods and procedures in the testing/examination of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory which includes phlebotomy, microbiology chemistry, hematology, immunology, urinalysis, and blood banking.
  • Confirms correct patient identification before obtaining any specimens.
  • Interprets and evaluates results of tests/examinations upon completion and anticipates reactions and departures from the norm and reports abnormalities and deviations to supervisor.
  • Maintains phlebotomy supplies, stocks the specimen procurement rooms, and specimen phlebotomy trays.  Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens.

All applicants must meet the following qualification requirements in order to be considered at the GS-05 level and above:

GS-05: Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at this grade level:

  • Bachelors degree, or higher graduate degree, with major study in medical or clinical laboratory or a related field such as chemistry and/or the biological sciences; OR
  • Bachelors degree in any field of study that included at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position.  Eligible courses may include: chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology, or the biological sciences; OR
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level performing a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests, examinations, and determinations.  The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and post-high school education that, when combined, meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

GS-06: Applicants who meet the following requirement may qualify for positions at this grade level:

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level performing a variety of clinical laboratory tests and examinations which individually and collectively are difficult and complex; monitor results of lab sample analysis for deviations from the norm, perform pathogenic microbiology; and maintain laboratory proficiency.

GS-07: Applicants who meet the following requirement may qualify for positions at this grade level:

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level performing a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests and examinations which are difficult and complex.  They involve an unusual breadth of assignments and the versatility and skill to perform tests in a full range of areas such as microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and blood banking. Maintain laboratory compliance with accrediting standards and perform advanced trouble shooting of erroneous sample analysis.

 


Quality Ranking Factor is a skill, knowledge, ability, or other worker characteristic which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job.  Quality ranking factors will not be used as screen-outs but may be used as ranking criteria.  Applicants who possess the following factor may rank higher than those who do not.

  • Certification from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) that is related to the medical laboratory field (i.e., medical lab technician, medical lab assistant, etc.). A copy of this certification must be submitted with your application.

If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be placed in one of three quality categories:

  • Best Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most requirements of the position.
  • Well Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and meets most of the requirements of the position.
  • Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not possess the relevant competencies to a substantive degree.
